而今后的3年,他将奔波于中澳,为这个国际热点项目做更多的努力。
Dr Paul Harvey’ s “Hot Spot” in Shandong
Dr Paul Robert Harvey is from Australia and is the Senior Research Scientist involved in soil microbial ecology of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). As a selected talent of the first level of the “Ten Thousand Talents Program” initiated by Shandong Provincial Government, he has been granted one million yuan by Shandong Provincial Government to jump-start his research project in Shandong.
Dr Harvey is very confident about his cooperation with Shandong. “What we are doing are all hot issues in the hi-tech fields. We will together accomplish more and better new discoveries and make new inventions. This is an affair to create wealth for people all over the world.”
Dr Harvey has launched deep research in the field of soil microbial ecology. He and his research team have verified that the utilization of molecular ecology and genetic methods can effectively identify and manage the main functional microbial populations in the soil. By utilizing the artificial propagation beneficial microbes to restrain the harmful microbes, an ecological balance with almost natural status can be formed, which can reduce the utilization of pesticide and chemical fertilizer so as to promote the output and quality of the crops, thus making the food greener and more organic. This technology can not only develop the biological pesticide but also can discover more new microbes and metabolites, which will have good application potentials in the pharmaceuticals, such as the anti-cancer medicines and new type antibiotics.
Dr Harvey compares the soil microbes to “gold deposit in the soil.” He in fact is the miner of the “gold deposit.”
Dr Harvey has frequently visited China over the past 10 years. Every time he came to China, he could find the new changes. In his eyes, the air quality has been improved. The living level of the Chinese people has been promoted. He thinks that the Chinese government has made efforts to do these things. “The research we are making will be helpful to China to realize her goals. For instance, the food will be greener. Without the use of chemical insecticide and burning fewer stalks, the food will be cleaner and the environment in China will be improved,” said he.
Dr Harvey praised the techniques and work attitude of the young Chinese scientists. That is also one of the motives encouraging him to apply for the “Ten Thousand Talents Program.” “We have a good team and powerful technological foundations. These are the necessary conditions for scientific research.”
Dr Harvey is very excited to get the one million yuan of financial support for his research project, which will help him to solve many actual problems. With the governmental support, many complex issues become simpler. “There is no national boundary in scientific research. We have a lot of cooperation to launch,” he said, when talking about his future cooperation with Shandong. And in the future three years, he will shuttle between China and Australia and contribute even more effort to the cooperation.
